Art, Heart, and Hope: “In Moment II” at the 2026 Cape Wine Auction

There is a profound alchemy that occurs when art, community, and a shared purpose converge. This past February, against the historic and sun-drenched backdrop of the Nederburg Wine Estate in Paarl, that alchemy was on full display.

The Cape Wine Auction 2026 was not merely a gathering of wine aficionados; it was a testament to the power of collective generosity. We are humbled and thrilled to share that the event raised a staggering R10.6 million, all of which will be dedicated to the education and social upliftment of children within the Cape Winelands through the Cape Wine Auction Trust.

The Power of a Moment

Central to this year’s contribution from the Anton Smit Studio was the auctioning of “In Moment II“, a life-size bronze sculpture. Standing nearly two metres tall, this figure, with its arms outstretched in a gesture of transcendence and vulnerability, found a new home for a remarkable R650,000.

For Anton, the “In Moment” series has always been about the “now”, the intersection of the physical and the spiritual. To see this work contribute so significantly to the future of the youth in our winelands is a beautiful full circle. Art, in its truest form, should serve as a bridge; here, it bridged the gap between creative expression and tangible, life-changing support for those who need it most. 

A Celebration of Spirit

The weekend was a whirlwind of energy that “never dipped,” as described by the auction’s directors. From the rhythmic performances by Mi Casa and Lloyiso that kept the spirit high to the intense bidding wars for once-in-a-lifetime experiences, the atmosphere was one of joy and determination.

It is an honour for the Anton Smit Studio to be part of an initiative that has now raised over R152 million since its inception in 2014. We believe that art is the “crown of God’s creation,” and using it to empower the next generation is the highest calling an artist can answer.
